Flash is a ubiquitous web platform used for games and interactive media that can be played from a browser. It can also be a cross-platform desktop application framework, through Adobe AIR. There also exist applications for making native executables through "projectors" which are applications that run Flash files.

The name "Flash" also refers to the Flash Professional software application for developing and creating animations and scripted content.

MiddlewareEdit

Libraries for developing Flash games solely through ActionScript 3.0 are also available. They have proven popular for those who want to make games for the Flash platform, but do not wish to buy the expensive Adobe Flash Professional software. This method of development is possible through using the AS3 compiler available in Adobe's open source Flex SDK. Another advantage of this middleware is that sometimes they provide features out of the box which would otherwise have to be reinvented using the Flash API by the end-user.
