It's in the form of a JRPG, and often plays off of the assumptions and traditions of that genre in a humorous way. But it isn't a straight mocking of the genre, as The Linear RPG and Progress Quest are, but it's a fully playable and fun JRPG in its own right, with different party members, abilities, well-balanced enemies, a dating mini-game, side quests, weapons, shops, and so on.
In battles it most closely resembles the Super Mario RPG / Paper Mario series, because often pressing buttons at the right times or holding buttons for the right amount of time (etc.) increases the damage of the characters' special attacks and spells.
